What's Taught:
The first week we will focus on getting your puppy used to sleeping in a kennel and being apart from his littermates. He will receive plenty of one on one human interaction to avoid the problems a dog can face when kept with his littermates too long. Your puppy will be treated like one of our own while here. It is during this period that he will learn to love people. Housebreaking is started on as well. Since your puppy will be in our home, this lesson is extremely important for us as well. Week two will be spent playing fetch. He will learn to LOVE fetch. This is very important for the future hunter and a great game to play with any Labrador. He will also start recognizing his name, which you pick out. He will be intoduced to a collar and leash. More work on dealing with restrictions, and dealing with them quietly! Further training on housebreaking- of course. Once your puppy recognizes his name the commands are introduced. Weeks three and four will be focusing on learning and practicing sit, stay, come, and heel.
We base our training on methods taught by Richard Wolters. During these early training days we try to make learning as fun as possible. Lots of praise and reward, no punishment. We do believe in punishment, just not this early on. We want your puppy to learn how to learn first and foremost. This enables you to further train your dog to fit your personal desires.
Remember, all though we teach your puppy these early commands, he is still a puppy. You will have to continue with the training when you bring your puppy home. The training we give is just the first step. We have trained him for our environment, you will have to train him for yours. Think of this program as Kindergarten. Some people say that everything they ever really needed to know they learned in Kindergarten. But, most of us hope for a little more!
